Review

Sleek, sassy, smooth. Toyota has given its bestselling Corolla a polished and affordable makeover, and it's the perfect accessory for the woman with reliability, practicality and eco-friendliness at the top of her list.

A cool new look with hybrid technology

Being careful not to change its winning formula too much, Toyota has added a more fuel-efficient engine to its Corolla line-up. Whether you’re zipping around the city for work, running multiple errands or carting the kids to and from school, the Corolla’s world-famous reliability and hybrid fuel efficiency (4.1L/100km) lets you focus more on what’s at hand instead of worrying about your car.

The Corolla Hybrid offers many lifestyle features to enhance the comfort of your drive, including dual-zone automatic air conditioning, keyless smart entry and ignition, sat-nav with live traffic updates, plus a colour 4.2-inch multi-information display that’s user-friendly.

The Corolla Hybrid’s interior includes soft-touch, high-quality and durable materials, and the placement of buttons and controls is sensibly simple – a boon if you’d rather not deal with complicated fittings and functions.

Boot space is generous (360 litres) for those weekend getaways with a special someone, and it can see you through big shopping sprees or the weekly grocery run for the whole family.

A relaxed and comfortable drive

Behind the wheel of this cute yet sleek hatchback you’ll notice the ride quality is comfortable and smooth. Steering is light at a low speed for car parks, and is firm and stable on highways. It also handles corners effortlessly.

The Corolla’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology offers three drive modes (power, economy and electric). While the system is extremely easy to use, it can be clunky at times. Taking off in heavy traffic is slow in electric mode, for example, so the system may not be practical for all circumstances.

Our verdict

If we have one small gripe it’s that the benefits of the Hybrid really depend on how you will use it. The electric power alone is most useful when travelling under 40km/h. So if you’re regularly on the highway, fuel consumption may rise to the point of a standard Corolla petrol engine. However, for those inching their way through traffic on their morning commute, the hybrid system will be on your side.

The new – and first for Australia – Corolla Hybrid (hatchback only) is priced from $27,530. Built into the price is the CVT automatic transmission, which adds $2000 to the other variants.
