Review

The Sedan. A favourite of taxis. Dull as dishwater. They blend into traffic without making any kind of statement. Yawn. The Mazda6 turns that on its head with a truly sporty and alive sedan with styling inspired by a predatory cat on the prowl.

The midsize master of mischief!

Ever since its introduction, the Mazda6 has won praise and found many homes in Australia thanks to its striking design which Mazda calls 'Kodo', playful driving experience and its efficient SkyActiv engine range. It has established a character within the medium car segment as the truly sporty choice. This is also helped by its sleek, sports car proportions and above average steering and handling.

A recent update really ironed out some of the 6’s rough edges, particularly in relation to noise, user friendliness and adding some safety features. There’s even a clever new system to make it corner more smoothly, called G-Vectoring.Its five star ANCAP rating, the latest child safety restraints and more active safety technology than you can poke a stick at give you relaxing reassurance.

Finely crafted with laser precision

Outside, there are striking alloys, up to 19-inches in size, but stepping inside, the finest steel inserts, aromatic leather and a solid dash make a very romantic impression. The new three-spoke steering wheel is a pleasure to hold and look at, with well-placed and nice feeling buttons, while the diversity of colours and materials is very upmarket and impressive. The chrome accents on the doors and dash are augmented by titanium inserts and the stitched leather panel across the dash is a great surprise. Fit and finish is impeccable, with the contrast of colours and materials giving you the impression you've purchased a much more expensive luxury car. Mazda's infotainment system is one of the best in the business for minimising distraciton, but at this stage, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto aren't available. This is set to change in the future, however.

Our verdict

The Mazda6 doesn’t have the most power in its class, nor the most space. The three-year unlimited kilometre warranty doesn’t equal Hyundai or Kia’s monumental efforts. It isn’t the quietest or most refined. But, none of that matters. It is possibly the most well-rounded in its class. It has more soul than any of its competitors and uses its space really well with outstanding fit and finish. The recent increase in refinement, interior quality and electronic chassis aids have made what was already an engaging family car that little bit better.?
