Review

After a reliable car that impresses without breaking the bank? With modern styling, a rocking stereo system and plenty of lifestyle features, the Mazda3 Touring sedan is the perfect road companion for the busy young professionals and families alike.

Practical lifestyle features

The Mazda3 is one of those cars that effortlessly combines the cool styling of a hot hatch with the practicality of a mid-size vehicle.

Inside, the Mazda3 Touring sedan has clever and modern styling, with tonnes of features coming as standard, the most impressive being the MZD Connect infotainment system. Its tablet-style colour screen pops up out of the dash and features nice clear graphics, easy-to-understand menus and everything you need for an enjoyable drive, including sat nav, full smartphone connectivity and in-built music apps Pandora and Stitcher.

The fun continues with the awesome six-speaker stereo that will have heads turning at the lights. There’s also a rear-view camera to help with parallel parking dramas.

Cup holders in the back and decent leg room (for its compact size) will ensure your passengers will travel in comfort. The Touring model also comes with leather seats as standard, offering excellent comfort and support for long journeys.

If a sedan isn’t your speed, there is a hatch option. Both the sedan and hatch have their benefits, so your choice might come down to personal preference. For example, the sedan does have a larger boot (408 litres) than the hatch (308 litres); however, the hatch’s two back seats fold down to give you a large wagon-sized space – perfect for impromptu shopping trips to the city or when you’re grocery shopping for the week.

An all-round fun drive

The Mazda3 is awesome to drive. It is easily one of the best-handling small cars on the market, offering precise steering that loves a winding road. The 2.0-litre engine gives the car zippy acceleration, while remaining as fuel-efficient as possible – making it a commuter car that will see you through any weekend road trips.

Its safety features are also a plus – the Mazda3 has a five-star ANCAP safety rating (the highest possible) and comes with Smart City Brake Support, which kicks in to help you avoid front-to-tail collisions.

Our verdict

The Mazda3 continues to be one of the most popular small to medium cars on the market – and it’s easy to see why. With its clever design and well-considered lifestyle features, it brings the perfect amount of excitement and intrigue to the mid-size sedan segment, with excellent build quality and – it has to be said – Japanese reliability to boot.

Prices for the Touring model start at $24,790. For a cheaper option, look to the base-model Neo or the Maxx, or if you’d like more premium features, look for the higher-powered and sportier SP 25, SP 25 GT or the top of the range SP 25 Astina.
