Review

Kia's newest small car, the Picanto is named after the Spanish word for spicy, and who doesn't need a bit more spice in their daily commute? It's cute, stacked with safety and an unbelievable amount of standard features. It's all the small car you could ever need, with very few drawbacks.

Cute and clever

The all-new Picanto is a cheerful and modern design, with its sharp European lines and tiger shark grille. It has been designed for maximum ease of parking outside, while every millimetre of space inside is devoted to passenger comfort or bootspace.

Picanto's colour chart is simply bursting with vibrant and cute colours, from loud-and-proud Pop Orange, junglelicious Lime Green and buzz-tastic Honey Bee yellow that turns every sun ray into a little drop of joy.

Its when you step inside, though, that you find that the Picanto is a very intelligent and user-friendly new car. The floating 7.0-inch infotainment system comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, giving you full control of your mobile phone at your fingertips. Standard cruise control, air conditioning and a very cool retracting cup holder mechanism mean the Picanto is loaded with fun surprises.

Outstanding value for money

Picanto certainly offers more standard equipment than any of its rivals at the same price, with standard stability control and a full array of airbags to keep you protected as well. But in addition to the low purchase price, Kia's amazing 7 year/ unlimited kilometre warranty, capped price servicing and roadside assistance make this a real stand-out buy.

Picanto is super affordable to run with a 35 litre fuel tank and economy of just 5.0 litres for every 100km travelled. That means more money left to fill the Picanto's boot with shopping and presents. If you need to load something particularly awkward, the split-fold rear seats will open up acres more room.

To help with manoeuvring through the local shopping mall car park, the Picanto has some tricks up its sleeve. Not only is it super compact with direct steering, but there is a full colour reverse camera on the 7.0-inch display. In addition to this, handy guidelines help you position the car like you've got eyes on the back of your head.

Our verdict

The new Picanto offers a huge amount of standard equipment, refinement, versatility and efficiency. The fact that it comes with a snazzy touch screen infotainment system should be more than a reason to consider this car. Throw in one of Australia’s best after-care packages and the Picanto is very hard to argue with as an affordable city car.
